How it Works

Mobile Payment at Vending Machine Using SMS

Vendco has a network of snack vending machines. Each machine has an ID such as VEND267 and a sign on the machine gives users the simple instructions to pay by sending an SMS to short code 72697. No pre-registration is needed to use the service.

  1. Customer sends an SMS with text VEND267 3 to short code 72697.
  2. Mobile network routes the message to the M-Payment application running on MSP.
  3. M-Payment parses the message and identifies it as a $3 payment to Vendco machine VEND267.
  4. M-Payment communicates with the billing partner to make the appropriate charge, for example $3.00, to the customer’s mobile phone bill or prepay credit.
  5. The mobile carrier returns success and a receipt is sent to the customer. If payment is not granted, e.g. insufficient prepay credit, a failure message is sent to the customer.
  6. M-Payment communicates with the vending machine and sends the credit value.
  7. The vending machine displays the credit and the customer completes the transaction.
  8. M-Payment sends a receipt to the customer using SMS.
  9. Customer takes the goods.

Mobile Payment for a Download

Mobile payment can be added to existing online e-commerce operations. Mobile payment makes goods and services available to a wider audience and carrier billing is very popular in countries where credit cards are not widely used.

Mobile Payment at a Checkout

Mobill extends mobile payment to real world shops and businesses. The customer pays via their cell phone and the retailer can validate the payment via a code, a machine-readable coupon or a direct link between MCP and point of sale system.

The SMS Drink service enables customers to buy a drink in a café or bar. Text names or prefixes are included on the menu, and the customer simply sends the prefix to a given short code, e.g. 72697.

Pay1   Pay2   Pay3

Example of ordering a Boston Beer, where the code boston is indicated on the menu.   Customer gets a receipt by SMS, including the code to quote at the till to redeem the purchase.   The full receipt attached to the message.

Getting Started

Mobill has developed a range of webAPIs (web Application Programming Interface) which provide a secure link over the Internet between MSP and the point of sale system or vending machine. Price can be linked to the text prefix, set by the customer or calculated by the point of sale system. MSP is easily configured to process the payment as required, and setting up the webAPI link to the point of sale system is straightforward.

Mobile Carrier Billing

Initial payment is from the customer to the mobile carrier. The system is typically configured so that the mobile carrier pays the client directly. Mobill then invoices for managed service charges or turnkey solution support.

Other Billing Method

MSP can be programmed to use other billing methods, such as credit card. The customer must first register the necessary details and mobile phone number. At step 4 in the above example, MSP communicates with the Credit Card Merchant to perform the billing transaction.
